In a shocking incident,a group of stray dogs mauled a two-year-old girl to death and left another five-year-old girl seriously injured in Sukhgarh village near Mohali.
The incident took place around 5:30 pm on Sunday.
According to the police,Sharda and Rekha were going to answer natures call in the fields when a group of dogs attacked them. On hearing their shrieks,villagers working in the nearby fields rushed to the spot with stones and batons and shooed away the group of around 15 dogs.
Sharda,who sustained injuries on her head,neck and waist,died on the spot. Her friend Rekha sustained serious injuries on leg and other parts of her body.
Rekha is admitted in GMCH,Sector 32,where her condition is said to be critical. Shardas body was handed over to her parents without conducting an autopsy examination,as ordered by Mohali SDM R P S Walia,Investigation Officer (IO) ASI Harmesh Kumar said.
The victims are daughters of migrant labourers,who work at the construction site of a mega township near here. Their parents live in hutments erected in the village.
Stray menace
Residents of Sukhgarh,Nanomajra and other nearby villagers have complained to the police that they have been facing the stray dog menace for quite sometime now. Further,the villagers complained that several villagers,especially children,have been attacked in the past.
It is extremely dangerous. This time a life was lost, Sukhpal Singh,who lives in Sukhgarh village,said.
After the incident,the police teams went around the area but could not find any dogs. We have asked villagers to inform us on spotting the killer dogs, ASI Kumar said.
Walia,meanwhile,has alerted the Animal Husbandry department to catch the stray dogs in the area and vaccinate them.
