State BJP divided over report

The state unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is divided over the recommendations of the resource mobilisation report, presented recently.

The report is likely to impact its core constituents in urban areas as bulk of the resources are proposed to be generated through tax to be levied in urban areas.

Many BJP leaders, including former minister Balramji Dass Tandon, are resisting the move to clear the proposals in the state cabinet meeting, which is likely to be held on Friday.

They are insisting to put off the meeting until the core committee of the BJP meets to discuss the recommendations.

Some leaders have alleged lack of clarity in the report with “finer details kept out”.

It is,however, unlikely that the state leadership will give in to their demand.

A top BJP functionary said,“What has been agreed upon in the report is through consensus. The BJP has no problem with what has been recommended in the report. It is in the interest of the state that the report be implemented.”

However, many BJP leaders say imposition of property tax, surcharge on VAT,hike in DTH charges and bus fare will impact the BJP’s core constituents.

“The common man will be taxed. Prices will go up,” said a leader.

State BJP president Rajinder Bhandari told The Indian Express,“The notion that VAT is an urban tax is wrong. It is an indirect tax applicable in all areas.

There will not be any changes in the report.”
