Stand up and Sing

The last six months have seen a spurt in gig spots in Delhi. Amateur bands take centre stage,as music genres from across the word join the tune

Delhi-based band,The Big Bang Blues,has been particularly busy during the last few months. Its members need to keep a constant tab on the gig spots mushrooming across the Capital. After all,once considered the mecca for indie bands,Hard Rock Cafe,Cafe Morrison and Turquoise Cottage,now have ample competition. In the last six months,more than ten new places have been marked on the map charting gig spots. These do not offer an elaborate dining experience,but they have found their USP in catering to youngsters,who want a place that is cosy,with reasonably priced alcohol. The gigs start in the early hours of the evening and taking centre stage are amateur bands playing different genres of music,from blues to jazz,rock and EDM (electronic dance music). “People want to go clubbing over the weekend,but if you just want to enjoy some original music,then gigging is the thing to do,” says Archit Kumar,copywriter at M&C Saatchi,who is a regular at city gigs. For those who are wondering where to head this weekend,TALK lists five new places where you can sit back,guzzle down some beer and swing to the tunes of indie bands.

SIRROCCO,Vasant Kunj

Owner of a private jet company,Air Charter Services,it was Munny Sethi’s passion towards hospitality that led the 28-year-old to conceptualise Sirrocco,which opened three months ago.

The Setting: Sirrocco is no small venture and can accommodate 600 people. The Mutant Audio and Bose sound equipments assure perfect surround sound.

USP: Sethi claims that Sirrocco has the longest bar in Delhi. The place also boasts of 55 crystal balls,hanging from the ceiling,that add to the feel. Open to inviting bands from all genres,Sethi will soon bring in a South-American in-house band.

Price tag: Sirrocco has no cover charges and meal and drinks for two costs between Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500.

Blast from the past: Delhi-based popular band,Avi and the Uprising,and rock bands Half Step Down and Cyanide,have brought in huge crowds at Sirrocco.

Up Next: The dates are still being finalised,but Sethi assures that Jay Sean will be at Sirrocco soon,followed by Delhi’s Five8.

Feedback: “The place has a great vibe. When I performed with the in-house DJ,I could almost feel the music and the audience felt it too.” says African Bongo player,Victoria.

MANAJSA,Hauz Khas

Located near Hauz Khas market,Manajsa is the brainchild of 24-year-old Anup Singh,who set up the pub three months ago. Karaoke,live bands and a resident DJ,Manajsa has lots to offer.

The Setting: Manajsa has two floors and the stage for artistes is almost three feet high,making sure that those on the second floor get a premium view of the performances. It can accommodate up to 200 people,but Singh insists on keeping it to 150,to avoid overcrowding.

USP: Twice a month,they have tribute nights and tonight Bare-faced Liar will pay a tribute to Paul McCartney. Don’t miss the Beetles table,the Eagles table and framed album

covers suspended on the walls.

Blast from the Past: Bangalore-based popular band,Thermal and a Quarter,Delhi-based Five8 and Big Bang Blues and Shillong-based Soulmate,have performed at Manajsa.

Up Next: Singh has a penchant for picking on different genres and this reflects in the performances organised at the venue. Lined up are gigs by Delhi’s Half Step Down and Circus.

Price Tag: With summer specials like Berry Blast,some snacks and a few pints of beer,a night for two costs around Rs 1,500.

Feedback: “The place is all about tasteful music. The stage is perfect for performers and has a great space reserved for the crowd,” says Ipshita Roy,vocalist of Big Bang Blues.

ZOOK,Saket

It opened as a club more than eight months ago,but in February,Zook went full throttle with live acts. Owned by Ricky Teja,27,and Priyank Sukheja,22,the grungy look and graffiti on the walls,give the ambience an underground feel.

The Setting: The first floor has a bar and second hosts live acts.

USP: The underground vibe of Zook suits the indie music scene and defines the aspirations of independent bands.

Blast From the Past: Electro-rock band Shaa’ir n Func and Delhi’s Advaita and Teddy Boy Kill,have performed at Zook.

Up Next: The owners are keen on organising innovative live acts.

Price Tag: Light snacks and a few drinks for two costs Rs 1,200.

Feedback: “Their in-house sound is pretty good and they also have DJ nights,apart from live acts,” says Samrat,member of Teddy Boy Kill.

SPOT,Saket

Not even a month-old,Spot is located behind Select Citywalk,Saket. It is Channel V’s first gig place in the country and there are many more in the pipeline.

The Setting: Spot looks like a set of one of the Channel V’s shows,with bright colours splashed on the walls. It is probably Delhi’s most tech-savvy place,with iPads as menu cards,video booths inside the washrooms and a Victionary,Pictionary on a plasma TV.

USP: Spot has an outside area,with a stage for open-air gigs.

Price tag: A couple of drinks at the bar,Tully Vision,and some snacks costs Rs 1,000.

Blast From the Past: None till now,but a lot is in store.

Up Next: Gigs by veteran Indian bands,Junkyard Groove and Groove Adda.

ROXBURY,Greater Kailash-I

Located in the bustling Greater Kailash market,Roxbury is owned by Priyank Sukheja,22,and Manish Talwar,32. It opened five months ago,but the live acts were introduced only a month ago.

The Setting: The bar and fine-dining area is on the first floor and the second floor has an open terrace.

USP: The laser-lighting on the rooftop and the scenic view.

Blast from the Past: There have been memorable performances by Jatin Puri and Devashi Sehgal and Delhi-based band Jazz Bastards.

Up Next: Performances by fusion singer,Jasmine,and The Commons.

Price tag: It is reasonably priced at Rs 1,200,for two.
