Stamp Duty

The Chandigarh Philatelic Club goes back in time with a unique showcase of stamps.

Each stamp bears a testimony of time and reminds you of a personality or a significant historical event. “It’s all about the hard work of many decades and an effort to keep alive the love for philately,’’ says Rakesh Walia,a long-time member of the Chandigarh Philatelic Club,as he takes us around the informative showcase of postage stamps at the Philatelic Bureau in the General Post Office,Sector 17.

The club has 50 members, with many exhibiting their collections here. Most of them can be spotted interacting with visitors and elaborating on the varied themes depicted through postage stamps, some as old as six decades. An absorbing section is that of martyrs. “Through philately,we have got to fore, the faces and images of martyrs and freedom fighters to refresh memories,” says Walia, who also had school children write essays on these personalities, and then use stamps to give them a face.

The stamp showcase also comprises a collection of stamps on Mahatma Gandhi,Tatya Tope,Rani Laxmi Bai,Mangal Pandey,Bhagat Singh and Nahal Singh among others. Also part of the collection are stamps on the golden voices of yesteryears,Sikh history, famous schools and universities — an absorbing variety. Walia has also included new stamps like “Minature Sheets of India” — which are sets of stamps depicting India’s varied faces,“These are like souveniers and are for keeps,’’ says Abinash Singh Luthra, founder of the club. He has on display the inaugural flight covers of Air India, the World War I and II censored covers and the first aerial post stamp (1911). “Philately is a dying art and we want to create awareness for the hobby,” adds Luthra.

A special stamp on Rabindranath Tagore,a collection on famous artists of India, with Indian art as the the stamp motif,is also a part of the collection. Another interesting section is on New Year and Christmas greeting cards by the Department of Post. “Here,we have displayed used cards collected over the years. The designs on the cards are by artists from every state of India,’’ says Deepak Sharma, who is a part of the organising committee.
