Spinning her world around

Strutting down the ramp and flashing designerwear was never really the centre of her universe.

When not walking the ramp, model Barkha Kaul jumps right behind the turntables to mix some good music

Strutting down the ramp and flashing designerwear was never really the centre of her universe. As much as she enjoys facing arclights in “picture perfect” poses,Delhi-based model Barkha Kaul sometimes kicks off her stilletoes to slip into a comfy pair of jeans and a tee,and jumps right behind a console to belt out some rocking numbers.

“I mostly do Bollywood mainstream numbers and house music,” says Kaul, who was in town over the weekend to rock the anniversary celebrations of Page 3 trinity of restaurants in Panchkula.

A model for 10 years and a deejay for almost three years now,Kaul’s love for music goes way back to her school days, when she tried to convince her folks to allow her to follow it. “I always had a passion for creative arts — be it music or acting. Apart from being crowned Miss Agra,I got a scholarship for a diploma course at the Asian Academy of Film and Television in Noida.”

It was here that she pursued acting — and ended up compering events for corporates and anchoring shows for DD,Zee,B4U and Zoom — to name a few. While modelling was turning out to be a full-time job,Kaul wanted to do “something more, something substantial and meaningful”,she says,“to evince a certain degree of respect by people”.

She thinks being a model is not enough. She says that a majority of the models just want to look pretty and walk down the ramp. “That is why the perception that models can’t act or go beyond the ramp is unfortunately true. Not many take the plunge or venture out into something else,or take the risk. A model’s career is shortlived, say 15-20 years, and that too if she is able to maintain herself,” she says.

“But I always wanted to do more. Being a model and a DJ has earned me the respect of my contemporaries as a creative person,” she adds. Although she took some basic training in the art and skill of deejaying,it was her boyfriend (and now husband) Vinayak Kaul, who has been her source of inspiration and her real mentor. Today,as she models on weekdays and deejays on weekends,Kaul feels complete and blessed.

Even if deejaying is believed to be a male-dominated field,Kaul is moving ahead, brushing up her skills and making more and more people sway to her tunes.

“Gone are the days when deejays would pride in just remixing a track. Today, one can find 20 different versions of the same song instantly on the net. So,it’s not about who plays it first, but how and when, and what kind of mixing touch they add to it. That’s the challenge,” she says.

Kaul now wants to try music production. “I’d now like to produce music for films,” she says.
