Speak Out

The city has 217 liquor shops and vendors present in its markets and roadsides. Priyanka Sharma spoke to a cross-section of the residents and found that their opinion was divided on the issue.

Rakesh Goyal,Social Worker

I am completely against liquor shops in the city. Frankly speaking, there is an urgent need to impose a ban on liquor. The so called open drinking culture slyly shelters violence. Such a large number of alcohol outlets should be not allowed to prosper.

Saroj Singla,Housewife

Alcohol has never done any good to the society, yet there are liquor shops here in outrageous numbers. Following western culture has led to this unchecked havoc which further drives the youngsters away from their own culture.

R K Gupta,Retired businessman

There is no police check on the numerous liquor shops in town. One can always find their customers drinking outside the marked premises, thus causing nuisance to people. Alcohol seems to be as common as water with so many outlets selling liquor.

Pankaj Kumar,Shopkeeper

I feel that there should be absolutely no liquor shops and alcohol should be banned in the city. Curbing illegal production and sale of liquor should be the next step.

Neeraj Bansal,Businessman

I am not from Chandigarh but the extensive number of alcohol shops here does not surprise me. In this era of westernization, alcohol consumption is more open and accepted. Hence there should be no objection to a large number of shops selling liquor.

Kanchan Gupta,Theatre Artist

Liquor shops and bars prevent people from looking for creepy outlets. There are two liquor shops near my house in Sector 19 but I have never come across any problems because of them.

A large percentage of people in the city consume alcohol which justifies the presence of so many shops. The only problem with these shops is that they fail to provide good facilities to the customers.

Ravinder Happy Vij,Theatre worker

A large number of such shops will stop people from breaking laws for consuming alcohol. In fact, more shops will ensure better competition amongst the shop owners leading to customer satisfaction. We should also not forget that these liquor shops provide employment to a lot of people.
