Six arrested for sexual harassment

Continuing the drive against sexual harassment,the Chandigarh police on Wednesday arrested six more persons from different parts of the city.

A senior police official said that the drive was started on Tuesday after a large number of complaints were received about ‘sexual harassment’ outside educational institutes and in public places.

“We arrested six persons for sexual harassment on Wednesday from Manimajra,Inter Service Bus Terminal (ISBT)- 17,Sector 10 and Sector 21,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police,Roshan Lal.

“Two among those arrested are B Tech students,” he said.

Those arrested were identified as two apple traders from Shimla. The two were arrested from the local Bus Stop in Manimajra.

The others were identified as Sukhwinder Singh of VPO Abina Kalan,Jai Vir and Rakesh,both residents of Sector 21,Chandigarh pursuing B Tech degrees.

The Chandigarh police has been using a ‘novel way’ to apprehend those indulging in sexual harassment in the city.

Police’s newly recruited lady constables in plain clothes are posted at various spots and when ever any person indulges in harassment,he is rounded up by the policemen who deployed near the spot in plain clothes.

On Tuesday nine persons were arrested from different locations during the drive.

“The drive is being held from 1 pm to 5 pm and this is time when women get free from colleges and offices,” said a police officer.

“We are keeping an eye at all such public places,” added the officer.

He said the drive will continue in the days ahead.
