When the seductive latino song Senorita from Zoya Akhtar’s Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara was making waves in India with its delightful vocals and luscious flamenco moves, musician Maria Del Mar Fernandez, the ‘Senorita’ of the song, was spending musical evenings alone in her Cardiz home in south-western Spain. The 33-year-old was poring over Spanish literature and traditional tunes that her mother — a flamenco artiste herself — had taught her as a little girl.

So,even as India was crooning Na main samjha,na main jaana,Fernandez was writing songs for her India tour and an upcoming Spanish album. Fernandez, who performed in Mumbai’s Taj Palace on Wednesday, will dress up in a frilly voluminous red dress and present her melodic improvisations in Delhi on October 16.

“This is my first trip to India and I am really excited. When I was recording Senorita with Hrithik Roshan,Farhaan Akhtar and Abhay Deol,I did not expect the Spanish-Hindi number with a Latin flavoured cut beat,to become this big. I am glad that people in India loved it because I loved recording it. Throughout the recording,I was dancing in the studio,” says Fernandez in halting English over telephone.

Accompanied by José Carlos Gómez on guitar and Enrique Terrón on percussion,Fernandez’s Delhi performance will have songs from her first solo album, currently being recorded in Spain. The event is being organised by Cervantes Spanish Institute.

Born and raised in Cardiz,Andalucia,Fernandez began performing at the age of 14,while she was still learning flamenco. Her performances were limited to Andalusian clubs in Spain and collaborations in local albums before she was spotted by Zindagi’s production staff and was cast in the song.

“Belen Castres,my road manager, told me that an Indian crew was looking for a Spanish flamenco musician and that they had picked me. Bollywood got me a lot of attention and I have fallen in love with everything Indian. As for working in Bollywood, there are many options right now but I am going to pick them carefully,” says Fernandez, who does not want to be typecast as the ‘Senorita’ girl. She adds that she is thinking of settling down in India.

In the upcoming concert,Fernandez is planning to include an impromptu collaboration with several Indian musicians. The artiste, who has toured with a number of Spanish flamenco companies in Europe, says that flamenco is similar to Indian music. “The resemblance is uncanny. It is so easy to believe the kinship between the two styles because the structure of the notes is very similar,” she says, indicating that Romani, the language of the gypsies, had originated from Sanskrit. “I have felt close to Indian music after I understood the nuances of flamenco. I am finally here in this inspirational land and really excited about it,” says Fernandez.
