SI held guilty in graft case

A sub-inspector of the Chandigarh Police,arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation in a case of graft and possession of drugs in June 2007,was held guilty by the special CBI court of Darashan Singh on Tuesday.

A sub-inspector of the Chandigarh Police,arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in a case of graft and possession of drugs in June 2007,was held guilty by the special CBI court of Darashan Singh on Tuesday.

The CBI had caught sub-inspector Ved Prakash when he was accepting Rs 15,000 from a drug peddler. Prakash was posted as in-charge of Sector-61 police post then.

Harpal Singh alias Raju,the drug-peddler,had informed the CBI that the cop had been demanding money from him and threatening to lodge a case against him,a CBI officer said. In his complaint,Raju had said the sub-inspector had demanded Rs 30,000. Subsequently,the CBI had laid a trap and caught Prakash from a dairy in Kajheri village,where he had gone to take the first installment (Rs 15,000) of the amount.

The cop was then taken to the Sector-61 police post,where two packets of smack were found from his drawer.

Prakash was booked under different sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. Following the incident,the accused was put under suspension.

The quantum of sentence will be pronounced on Wednesday.

41 cops arrested in last five years
As many as 41 personnel of the Chandigarh Police,including one inspector,14 sub-inspectors,four assistant sub-inspectors,10 head constables and 12 constables,have been arrested in 33 graft cases in the last five years. Notably,about 22 of them were caught by the CBI alone. Most of the accused have been found guilty.
