Gladiator-style sandals are going strong this season

Even though it has been a while since we caught the sandal-sporting Russell Crowe hit the big screen with his blockbuster Gladiator, his wardrobe continues to inspire fashion labels. In this case, the legacy is the Roman sandal. Given their growing popularity, the trend seems to be going strong this season too. “I got my pair from Aldo,” says model Akanksha Yadav, who we spotted at a city fashion show wearing an attractive but comfortable pair. The sandals consist of a T-strap with multiple straps going across the foot. And almost everyone seem to be sporting the breezy footwear in the muggy weather. “I think Gladiator sandals are really cool. They go with summer wear,be it with a tunic and tights or capris,” says Yadav who has a pair in tan with straps around the ankles which she has paired with a loose flowing top and black tights.

Also flaunting similar pairs are models Shonal Rawat and Ekta Jaggi. While Rawat’s sandals are all-leather with a thick ankle strap,Jaggi’s pair, also from Aldo, are more true to the style with multiple straps. “Just like peep toes and ballerinas were such a rage sometime back, this summer Gladiators rule,” says Jaggi. Says model and anchor Shonal Rawat,“Each time one flipped through fashion glossies or browsed through Bollywood photo-ops,the style divas were always walking tall in their sky-high stillettos. There are of course various versions of the style.”

Interestingly, among the ones doing well includes pairs with straps that ride up all the way till the calves. If you are looking for such a pair, head to The Shoe Box in Sector 8 market that has on its shelves an entire collection, with prices starting at Rs 795. According to fashion merchandiser Kirat Randhawa who has a pair of Gladiators in black,“Last summer,flip-flops and wedge heels ruled but the gladiators are here to stay.” She suggests McGreen in Sector 22 for a look.

If you are looking to jazz up the trend, then opt for those with killer heels. We found quite a collection at The Shoe Rack in Sector 8 in colours such as black, golden and silver. These are priced Rs 1,200 onwards. Sporting such a pair was model Candice Pinto who walked the ramp for the recently held Blenders Pride Fashion Tour in the city. However, when it comes to owning a pair of Roman sandals there’s only one place that offers value for money, says former Delhi University student Rubina Sandhu. “It’s Janpath in Delhi. For Rs 350,you can get yourself a pair that will last a long time. I can vouch for it,” says Sandhu who has it in leather with criss-cross straps. Time to flaunt it,right?
