Shimla gears up for Hanuman idol inauguration

While the highly-anticipated visit of the Mukesh Ambani family to Jakhu Hill did not materialise on Tuesday.

While the highly-anticipated visit of the Mukesh Ambani family to Jakhu Hill did not materialise on Tuesday, the Shimla district administration and the city police are not taking any chances for the big rush expected on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti on Thursday when the 108-feet-tall Hanuman idol on the 8,500-feet hill will be formally unveiled by actor Abhishek Bachchan.

The police have drawn up a comprehensive plan to regulate pedestrian and vehicular traffic on the routes leading up from Cart Road,Mall Road and Navbahar. Two reserve additional battalions (60 men) have been called from outside the city for the event.

Considering the steep slope of the road and the paucity of parking space near the temple, where only the first 160 cars can be accommodated, most vehicles are likely to be restricted beyond Five Bench junction, about half-a-kilometre below the temple, said Shimla Superintendent of Police Sonal Agnihotri.

Policemen will be stationed at every 50 metres to ensure smooth movement on the steep road.

Agnihotri said the hour-long inauguration function of the idol will be over by 11.30 am. “Since there is a community feast (bhandara) on the same day,we are appealing to people to come for it only after the function is over,to avoid inconvenience. Additional parking places have been identified on the Five Bench-St. Bedes Road,Titla Hotel and a few other pockets,” said Agnihotri.
