The much awaited Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee (SGPC) general elections will be held in September,as the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has given clearance to this effect to the Gurdwara Election Commission.
Sources said the MHA has written to the Commission saying that the elections for the SGPC can be held either on September 4,11 or 18. The Commission has to finalise the date and then revert back to the MHA. Elections can be held at any time now and the notification is imminent. The Commission has called a meeting of concerned commissioners from different states in the evening. After having discussed all parameters pertaining to elections, the date will be finalised, said Justice H S Brar (Retd),Chief Commissioner of Gurdwara Election Commission.
He added that the model code of conduct which will be no different from code which is enforced during the general elections will come into force once the notification for elections is issued.
According to political analysts, with the model code of conduct in place, the government will suffer a setback for about 45 days as all development activities and announcements in view of the forthcoming Assembly elections will come to a halt.
