A sewer line, laid in Phase 11 in 2020 to resolve chronic blockage issues, has collapsed at several points following the recent heavy rains, causing severe inconvenience to the residents of Mohali.
Former GMADA executive engineer N S Kalsi has demanded a high-level inquiry into the matter. “At the time of installation, I had officially written to the Municipal Corporation, stressing the need to prepare a strong bedding for the pipes. However, no attention was paid,” Kalsi added.
He further claimed that he had even apprised the then Municipal Commissioner about the use of substandard pipes and took him for an on-site inspection, but no corrective action was taken.
According to Kalsi, the rains exposed the poor construction as joints between several pipes came apart, collars broke, and the soil was washed away, leading to subsidence. “It is evident that poor quality work and negligence are behind this collapse. Strict action must be taken against the responsible contractors and officials,” he added.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal, accompanied by Municipal Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh, carried out a joint inspection of damaged sewer lines, storm drains, and roads in Mohali. She directed engineering staff to initiate urgent repair works and restore normalcy at the earliest.
Mittal made it clear that accountability will be fixed wherever substandard construction or negligence is identified. She instructed the Municipal Corporation, PWD, Drainage Department, Mandi Board, and the Water Supply & Sewerage Board to work in close coordination and prepare a time-bound restoration plan. Assuring the public, she said that comprehensive efforts are underway to address waterlogging, broken roads, and sewerage problems in a planned and timely manner.
