‘Set aside time to deal with public grievances’

In an attempt to ensure the public have faith and confidence in the administrative machinery, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Tuesday directed all field officers including the deputy commissioners to be accessible to the general public and redress grievances.

Presiding over the first meeting of divisional commissioners and deputy commissioners of the state after assuming charge as the Chief Minister for the fifth time,he asked the deputy commissioners and the field officers functioning under them,to be present in their offices for two hours between 11 am and 1 pm on Tuesday,Wednesday and Thursday every week,to meet the general public and attend to their problems.

The chief minister met the administrative officials at his office on Tuesday morning. Badal said the state government had recently issued guidelines for officers to be in their offices from 9 am to 5 pm from Tuesday to Thursday to carry out official work besides listening to the grievances of the general public. He directed them to keep their field visits and tours for other days. The chief mister also asked the deputy commissioners to attend to court work regularly for at least two days in a week to dispose of pending cases related to appeals in revenue matters.

Badal directed the finance department to immediately release the requisite funds to the drainage department for timely completion of flood protection work. He also asked the financial commissioner,revenue to ensure prompt payment of compensation to people affected by floods.

Reviewing arrangements for procurement of wheat during the current rabi season,Badal directed the deputy commissioners to personally oversee the procurement operation with functionaries of the Food and Civil Supplies department and the heads of the procurement agencies to undertake the procurement as per their allotted share so that every grain of the farmers was lifted. He also asked the deputy commissioners to ensure prompt payment to the farmers by the procurement agencies within 48 hours.

The chief minister categorically asked the deputy commissioners to get all the encroachments on the rural link roads removed by demarcating the area of the road.
