Sector-42 park turns dumping ground

The present condition of a Sector-42 park seems to be in contradiction to Chandigarh’s image of ‘City Beautiful’.

The present condition of a Sector-42 park seems to be in contradiction to Chandigarh’s image of ‘City Beautiful’. Construction waste heaped in a corner, overgrown grass and filthy conditions present a neglected picture.

While residents have demanded time and again that the land be developed as a park, action is yet to be taken.

The land, which has a large number of mango trees, was maintained by residents till a year ago when construction waste was dumped here. Rainwater accumulates in the uneven land and potholes proving to be a health hazard.

Though there are only a few swings and a bench,it has become impossible to sit or walk around due to extensive wild growth. The residents also claim to have constructed a badminton court some time back.

A resident,Deepinder Chhabra, says: “The lights and poles of the badminton court were stolen. The court is lying dug up for laying the pipeline for tertiary treated water bec our children cannot play here.”

Union Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal had in 2007 recommended that work for fixing railing and benches in the park be carried under the MP Local Area Development Scheme. However, action is yet to be taken.

Another resident claims to have given representations to the Municipal Corporation, but to no avail.

Area councillor Bhupinder Singh Badheri says,“I want to see the area developed. However, the land in question is not with the Municipal Corporation. In case it is handed over to the civic body,we will take steps to develop it.”
