Shocked at the acquittal of former Punjabi University Vice-Chancellor Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia in a molestation case filed against him by his student Saru Rana, the latter’s family is ready to take the battle to the Supreme Court and the National Commission for Women.

Drawing similarities with the Ruchika molestation case,Saru’s family today said grave injustice had been done to their daughter and her entire career was spoilt. Her mother said they were moving the Supreme Court in the case.

Ahluwalia was acquitted eight years after Saru,a second year student of Fine Arts department of Punjabi University, had filed a case of attempt to rape and outraging modesty against him in February 2002.

A Patiala court had yesterday let off Ahluwalia in the case, after the Punjab and Haryana High Court accepted his revision petition challenging the framing of charges against him by the trial court in October 2002.

Saru’s counsel Navkiran Singh said: “We are not only moving the Supreme Court in the case, but also petitioning the NCW,seeking their intervention. We will also seek NCW’s help in assisting us in the case and request them to become a party with us.”

A special leave petition will soon be filed in the SC,he said.

Drawing similarities with the Ruchika molestation case,Singh said: “It was a grievous crime against women,as the girl’s life has been destroyed.”

Ahluwalia was discharged from the case yesterday by a Patiala court,as High Court judge Jora Singh observed,“The complaints against Ahluwalia are politically motivated and false. On perusal of the documents,I am of the opinion that no case can be made out against the accused.”
