Sanitation staff stir raises a stink in 15 districts

The strike by Class 4 employees of sanitation wing from June 7 has raised a stink in 15 districts of Punjab.

The strike by Class 4 employees of sanitation wing from June 7 has raised a stink in 15 districts of Punjab. The employees are on strike demanding regularisation of over 3,000 contract workers employed in different municipal committees and councils of the state.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had agreed to the employees’ demand when they had gone in strike in March for a week. But no notification has been issued on it. The week-long strike has led to heaps of garbag being piled up and dust storms have only added to the woes, spreading the foul smell.

“The government is playing with our sentiments and not fulfilling our demands,so we have no choice but to stop picking garbage. Our staff is underpaid for the hardwork done by them. The CM agreed in letter and spirit and later forgot. Even now a week has passed and no official has come forward. We understand the inconvenience of residents, but we have no other choice,” Kuldip Sharma, state general secretary of the Safai Karamchari Association said Sharma informed that apart from picking garbage, they are not even cleaning the chocked sewer lines.

Garbage can be seen littered in Ferozepur,Muktsar,Faridkot,Moga,Mansa,Sangrur,Barnala,Gurdaspur,Tarn Taran,Kapurthala,Sahnewal,Samrala,Khanna and many other areas of the state.

Abohar MLA Sunil Jakhar said,“I had taken up this matter with the CM in March and in the Vidhan Sabha session. The CM promises but doesn’t do anything.”
