The leaders of Shiromani Akali Dal and Bhartiya Janata Party rued the lack of development in the city under the present Municipal Corporation ruled by the Congress. The opposition leaders said the Municipal Act as well as the powers of a mayor were the same during the tenure of former mayors from SAD-BJP.
In a press conference held on Wednesday, the leaders stressed that as the Congress government is in power at the Centre as well as has a majority in the MC,they could have got the Municipal Act amended, which was not done.
Referring to Mayor Kamlesh,Akali councillor Harjinder Kaur said: This is the first time when a mayor has expressed helplessness at working along with the executive. Congress has been in power for the past many years. Where was the hitch in getting the Act amended? We had ensured that we would work taking along officials as well as councillors of all parties, she said.
Similar sentiments were expressed by BJP General Secretary Sanjay Tandon. He said: The tenures of the mayors of SAD-BJP can be compared to those of the Congress. Much more development work was taken up during the terms of former mayors.
The leaders also pressed people to vote for Malkit Singh, the SAD-BJP candidate for the byelections to Ward Number 10 of the Municipal Corporation. The leaders promised to make the ward a model ward with special emphasis on villages.
Leader of Opposition in the MC House,Gurcharan Dass Kalaa, said the Mayor was organising Teej celebrations ignoring important development works.
Friday the verdict day?
The scheduled House Meet of the Municipal Corporation on Friday would see agenda items pertaining to more powers for councillors being taken up. Among the most important ones is the implementation of the 74th Amendment. This would bring more functions under the purview of the MC. The demand of nominated councillors seeking development funds at par with elected representatives would also be taken up.
