In what could prove to be a major embarrassment for the SAD,its Faridkot candidate Deep Malhotra has been found in possession of two voter identity cards — one made in New Delhi and the other in Faridkot.

According to Section 17 and 18 of the People’s Representative Act-1950,no citizen can be registered in more than one constituency. The rule also stipulates that in case a person cancels one voter card to make another,a time period of at least 12 days has to be given to rule out any kind of objections.

According to a complaint filed by Jarnail Singh — a resident of Faridkot — till January 10,the names of liquor baron Deep Malhotra, his wife and his son featured in the Madipura electoral rolls of the Punjabi Bhag area in New Delhi. While Malhotra’s name stood against voter number 504,his wife was 505 and his son’s 507.

Despite being a resident of Punjab Bhag for the last 30 years,to felicitate his nomination from Faridkot,Malhotra applied for a voter card on January 3. The very next day,he was on the electoral rolls.

Gunning for Malhotra’s blood,Congress’s Faridkot candidate Avtar Singh Brar said,“The Akalis are fooling the people. The administration should hold an inquiry into the issue, seek legal opinion and cancel Malhotra’s nomination.”

Malhotra, however, maintained that he was innocent. “I had applied to the Delhi administration for cancellation of our votes. The application is very much in place.

“However, these are official matters and take time. The Opposition has nothing against me and is raising baseless issues like these.”

When asked,Faridkot DC Ravi Bhagat said,“We have checked the records and Malhotra has submitted an application for cancellation of his vote in New Delhi. With today being the last of filing the nominations, prima facie it does not seem that he has broken any rules. So,there is no question of cancelling his nominations. Meanwhile,we are looking into the matter in detail.”
