HE has been fielding questions hurled by an army of scribes throughout his career. Questions that,Jackie Shroff admits, can be “intimate, controversial, boring, boorish and,at times, smart”. On September 28,it will be a role reversal of sorts, with Shroff asking all the questions as a journalist. The actor plays a “well-known reporter” in Dutch director Laurens Postma’s first Hindi film,Cover Story ,with newcomer Anjum Nayar. The film is an adaptation of legendary Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh’s film The Interview, which was remade by actor-director Steve Buscemi as a Hollywood film starring Sienna Miller.

“It is a two-character film revolving around a well-known journalist and a famous movie star,” says Shroff, who slips into the character of a political and war correspondent. He is assigned to interview an actor, played by debutante Anjum Nayar. “It is a story with just two characters and their conversations,” says Shroff. Written by Postma himself, the film is produced by Glorious Entertainment and has music by Monty Sharma of Saawariya fame and Shamir Tandon,well-known for his work in Page 3.

Shroff promises that the film packs in a great deal of suspense and action. It is also a role that he has “unconsciously been preparing for” all through his career. “I have faced so many journos in my lifetime. My father was one,he used to write for Blitz magazine. I,too, dabbled in it for my blog for sometime,so acting like a reporter in the film came naturally to me,” says the actor.

He is also awaiting the release of his international film with American filmmaker Paul Nicholas, shot in 2006. “It’s called First Fear and I play the villain with five avtars,” says Shroff. From a blind beggar to a bald priest,a shopkeeper,a businessman to a balloon-seller,Shroff has a major role and says that the film is in post-production stage and will release soon. “I’d love to do more international films, but not with blink-and-miss roles,” he says.

This year will also see him pair up with Amrita Singh (they last starred together in the hit Aaina) for YashRaj’s next venture. Then, there is KC Bokadia’s Dirty Politics, based on the Bhanwari Devi case, and a sequel to Teri Meharbaniyaan. “I’ve done Telugu,Bhojpuri and Bengali films, and am planning to do a Gujarati and Marathi film as well,” says the actor, who is busy designing a mini film city in Ahmedabad,Gujarat. “I am working on a compact model with a studio,a green space, sound and light shows,a film library and a restaurant in this space,” he concludes.
