The district food and civil supplies department, along with the executive magistrate and the police, raided another sugar godown in Ludhiana on Sunday and seized 9,780 quintals with a market value of Rs 4 crore. The godown on Chandigarh Road is owned by Chandiram of Jalandhar.
With this, total sugar worth Rs 41 crore has been seized in Ludhiana in the last three days, said H S Mokha,District Food and Civil Supplies Controller.
From the two godowns sealed earlier at Sheera village on Rahon Road,97,500 quintals of sugar worth Rs 34 crore and 8,516 quintals worth Rs 3 crore were recovered.
Mokha said: Owners have not come forward to claim their stocks till now. If they dont come,we will take permission from the deputy commissioner to allow us to auction the stock as soon as possible because sugar is a perishable item.
Though the entire operation was conducted with the involvement of the police department, the role of the police is under scanner because no arrest has been made even three days after the first seizure. FIRs have been registered against the godown owners under Essential Services Commodities Act. According to rule,no one is allowed to store more than 2,000 quintals of sugar.
During the raid at Chandirams godown, the manager of the godown present on the occasion said five firms had jointly kept the sugar stock at one place. He,however, could not show any document.
Mokha said the price of sugar might come down a little after this huge seizure. In contrast, however, the price jumped to Rs 33 per kg in the retail market on Saturday, after remaining Rs 31 to Rs 32 till Friday. The wholesalers have increased the price per quintal all of a sudden. Retailers have asked the District Food and Civil Supplies Controllers office to auction the seized sugar at the earliest so that more stock can come to the market and prices can be brought down.
