Rs 16-cr boost to GMCH

With the number of patients approaching the Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32 swelling,the UT Administration has drawn up a Rs 16.3-crore plan for fiscal 2009-10 to upgrade the facilities and create more infrastructure.

While Rs 10.3 crore has been provided for completion of construction works,Rs 4 crore will be spent on the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment. Besides,Rs 2 crore has been released for networking at the hospital.

The GMCH plans to go in for molecular DNA-based diagnosis besides an MRI facility. The hospital registered around 2.87 lakh patients in 2007-08 and the number shot up to around 3.76 lakh in 2008-09.

During 2007-08,the number of registered indoor patients was 31,630 which increased to 34,689 in 2008-09.

The number of both minor and major operations registered a considerable increase. As many as 11,455 major and 13,548 minor operations were conducted in 2008-09 against 766 major and 1,594 minor surgeries during 2007-08.

Dr Raj Bahadur,Director Principal,GMCH-32,said upgradation of the existing infrastructure and facilities and induction of the latest technology had made the hospital popular.

“We must acknowledge that quality healthcare is the fundamental right of people. There is little doubt that healthcare in Chandigarh is improving by the day and has made the City Beautiful a hot property from the medical care point of view,” added Dr M S Bains,Director,UT Health Services.
