Rs 1.75-crore cybercrime: Police arrest seventh accused from Amritsar

The cybercrime police of Panchkula, has arrested another accused in the alleged Rs 1.75-crore cyber fraud. The accused, identified as Harry, is the seventh accused arrested from Amritsar. The accused was produced before the court and has been remanded in five days’ police custody for detailed interrogation, police said.

The case dates back to 2024, when a Panchkula resident lodged a complaint at the cyber police station on July 31. In his complaint, he stated that on July 5, 2024, he came across a Facebook advertisement related to the stock market, which promised lucrative returns on investments. After liking the post, he received a WhatsApp link from the fraudsters, who lured him with the promise of doubling his profits through online trading. Enticed by the offer, the complainant invested a significant amount of money over time, and was eventually duped of around Rs 1.75 crore.

An FIR was registered under Sections 316(2), 318(4), 336(3), 338, 340, and 61 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023. The investigation was led by Sub-Inspector Bhoop Singh.

According to DCP (Crime) Manpreet Singh Sudan, the police had earlier arrested six individuals connected to the same scam. The first two accused, Krishan Kumar and Subhash, both residents of village Tukawali in Sirsa district, were arrested on December 16, 2024.

On July 11, the third accused, Sanjay Kumar alias Boxer, a resident of village Tarkawali, Sirsa, was taken into custody, leading to further disclosures about other members of the gang. Later, on July 27, the fourth accused, Tejinder Pal Singh of Civil Lines, Sirsa, was arrested and taken on one-day police remand. The fifth accused, Harjeet Singh of Amritsar, Punjab, was arrested on October 3, followed by the sixth accused, Parvinder, also from Punjab.

The police stated that the investigation is ongoing and that more suspects have been identified. Efforts are underway to trace and arrest the remaining members of the cyber fraud network.
