The recent floods have taken a severe toll on road connectivity in Ferozepur. While a 36-kilometre stretch has been damaged completely with several drains overflowing, another 100 kilometres are under water.
This data has been stated in the official report, which the district administration sent to the state government on Monday. It will cost more than Rs 5 crore to rebuild the 36-kilometre stretch and the damage of the submerged area will be assessed once water recedes completely.
Apart from this,18 breaches have occurred at different points in canals and again the loss will run into crores, say officials who are busy with repair works. The Drainage department, however, has indicated that of the total 89 drains,20 overflowed and damaged more than 28,000 acres of farmland.
Sanjeev Gupta, executive engineer,Drainage department, said,We cannot assess the exact monetary loss as of now because the water is still running above danger mark in many drains. Our primary focus is to fix that. Once the water recedes, the damage will be assessed.
