Stunt Mania gets a whole new definition with Ghost Ryderz

There was a pretty short-lived show in the ‘80s,but the 13 episodes it aired,Street Hawk with its crime-fighting cops and bikes created a euphoria enough to last a lifetime. And the world lapped up the tagline – the man,the machine,in short,a passionate love affair between the two. “Only a biker would understand this,” professional stunt biker and team organiser Mikhil of Ghost Ryderz, unlocks his helmet, parks his bike and takes a break. In town for a performance and to audition prospective stunt bikers for Pulsar MTV Stunt Mania,Mikhil’s here with rest of the four bikers all the way from Kerala. “Back home, they don’t even look at us,let alone cheer or clap,” Mikhil fills us with something that can very well pass the Ripley’s Believe it or Not test: the elders, and the girls down south don’t consider stunt biking worthy of an applause or attention. “In Kerala, biking is a taboo, and they look down upon us!” however,up north,Mikhil’s the hero, the guy everyone want to queue up to,take autographs, and pose for pictures. “Especially the girls,” with quite a crowd turning up for the GDs and auditions at The Gurukul in Panchkula,Mikhil and the gang of Ghost Ryderz are definitely on a high. “We’re getting tips and techniques from them!” laughs Mikhil.

Started by a group of friends about a year-and-a-half back,“Ghost Ryderz is a team of young biking fanatics which has now evolved to a full-fledged stunt team, and approximately 70 members,” informs Mikhil. For them, whether it’s riding or stunting, biking takes you to a different high. “Feeling the wind on your face, the sense of freedom, hearing the footpegs scraping the road; biking always leaves you craving for more. The more you ride, the more you want to do it again,” he trails off. Interestingly, all bikers have alias,a ‘group’ name which they go by. “I am Phenom,Abhishek here is Neo,Srikanth is Brutus,Senthil Kumar is Dauntless and Indrajith is Redaktor,” Mikhil introduces them and in a running commentary explains the choice of name. “Phenom because I’m quite a phenomenon when it comes to stunt biking,Neo because he is the one,the ultimate master, one of the top professional stunt bikers in India,Brutus is the originator of stunts,Dauntless is fearless, and Redaktor is our video editor,” he says. If he’s the jack of all stunts and the crowd puller, then Brutus is brutal with his strategy and attack, while Neo comes through smoothly like Keanu in The Matrix. “It was after watching stunt god Chris Pfeiffer that I got hooked and picked up all the international moves,” says 21-year-old Abhishek. Circle wheelies, stoppies,no handers, horseback…there are endless permutations and combinations to the stunts, but like Srikanth,a civil engineering student puts,it’s all about technique and science. “Stunt biking runs on the principle of momentum, and you’ve got to have the ABC correct – accelerator, brakes, clutch before you get into it,” he says. For Mikhil,it’s always safety first, and as a tip,it’s mastering the basic wheelies before moving on to the next level. “Make sure you perform for passion, and in a controlled environment,” he advises. Got it!
