Retd Col booked on molestation charges

Col Sharanjeet Singh (retd) and Naib Subedar Shital Singh (retd) were booked under Section 354-A, 354-D and 506 of the IPC

The UT Police has registered a case of molestation following directions of National Commission for Women (NCW) against a retired colonel and retired naib subedar who allegedly molested a lab technician working at the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS).

The accused Colonel Sharanjeet Singh (retd) and Naib Subedar Shital Singh (retd) were booked under Section 354-A (sexual harassment), 354-D (stalking) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code with the Industrial Area police station.

According to the Counsel for the complainant, Advocate Raj S Jumiyal, the issue had been lingering on for the last two years. “It all started last year. My client was working on contract basis at ECHS since 2006. Colonel Singh was her officer in-charge,” he said.

The counsel said that it started with messages which the complainant kept ignoring and asked Singh not to message him. Naib subedar, Shital Singh was also involved in the same. A widow, whose husband died a few years ago in an accident, the complainant said she was called inside the office of Colonel Singh. “Singh touched her in an unwanted manner and even tried to force himself upon her. She ran out and got a DDR lodged on July 23, last year. However, no action was taken. Representations were given to the SSP UT Police on July 24, September 6 and September 24 last and to the station commander of Chandimandir on July 26”, he said.

Last July, the complainant had also approached a local court. “It has been more than a year and nothing concrete has come out. So, my client gave a representation to the NCW who then directed to register an FIR. The case was registered on September 15”.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) East, Parvinder Singh said, “we had arrested the two accused and were later released on bail. The investigations in the case are on.”
