Electricity and water supply in many sectors were hit due to relentless rain that continued for over eight hours.

Colonies including Azad,Ambedkar,Indira and Rajiv presented a picture of administrative apathy as the area was logged with water. The roads were also submerged under water as people waded through ankle-deep water. With no proper system of sewage, squalor and garbage floating in the water made matters worst for the residents. Some houses in Azad Colony had water seeping inside the premises and some small shanties in Indira Colony were also flooded. The dividing road of Industrial Area,Phase I and II leading to the railway crossing was filled with water and another from the crossing towards Sector 19 was also logged. Markets, including Sector 10,where work on expansion of parking lots is going,on was also a mess with cement and rubble posing as a hazard. “We had asked the authorities to complete the work well in time. With rains it will become more troublesome for the shopkeepers as well as customers to come to the market,” rued BB Singal, former councillor.

Rains spelt trouble for a residents visiting the inner market of Sector 11 where HUDA has dug the road to lay water pipes. A number of vehicles including cars got stuck in the dug-up area and people had a tough time pulling their vehicles out. As the mud was washed away on the road,it was a tough call for the pedestrians walking on the slippery track. Water also collected on recently carpeted road of Sector 9-10 and Sector 15-Industrial Area,Phase-II. The ‘VIP’ sector,Sector 6 was no better off as water logged in front of government accommodation,General Hospital,Gymkhana Club and the Sector 6-8 roundabout.

Electricity and water supply was also erratic with sectors including 2,9,10,11,12,19,20 being the worst hit. This also hit water supply with taps running dry in a lot of sectors.

In Kalka and Pinjore, the situation was equally bad with the main road leading to Pinjore choked with water. Heavy rains and water logging also caused traffic jams, slowing the pace of traffic on the national highway. The bottleneck of Kalka-Pinjore highway also witnessed long traffic snarls as a lot of tricity residents drove uphills to enjoy the spell of rain.

Mahavir Kaushik,sub-divisonal magistrate, has asked tehsildar and naib tehsildar, division I,II and III,to submit a detailed report on water logging in the district by Wednesday, which would be submitted to the deputy commissioner.
