The heavy rains that lashed the northern regions, have hit the local crops of most of the vegetables, thus increasing the prices. However, the rates of some of the vegetables are stable and some of the prices have dropped considerably.
The supply of vegetables from other states has fallen in the last few days because of the incessant rains, which have led to the increased prices of the vegetables. Ferrying of onion from Maharashtra has caused the prices to shoot up further.
Vegetables which were selling for between Rs 14 and Rs 20 per kg two days ago in the grain market, are now being sold at Rs 16 to Rs 26 per kg. Tomatoes, available at Rs 24-36 per kg,are being sold at Rs 45 in Apni Mandi while they are sold at Rs 28 at wholesale rates.
One of the vendors Rajesh Kumar said,We used to get our vegetables from Saharanpur but some part of its area is under flood so the crop must have been damaged. The rates are increasing these days.
Similarly, the rates of ginger have gone up from Rs 50 to Rs 70-110 per kg,while garlic and lemon are also selling at double market price. Surprisingly,a few of the rates have fallen down too, including potatoes, which are available at Rs 15 per kg as against Rs 19 per kg two days ago, while lemons, which were sold at Rs 15-35 per kg,now are available at Rs 10-25 per kg at wholesale rates.
Kuldeep Singh,Secretary of Apni Mandi, said,Vegetable supply these days seems to be very low. Even local farmers are not able to bring the vegetables, and thus the prices are shooting up.
The rates at Apni Mandi are much higher. Onions in Apni Mandi are being sold at Rs 34 per kg,pumpkins, which are worth Rs 7 in the grain market, are being sold at Rs 30 there. Tomatoes are sold at Rs 45,while green chillies at Rs 32 per kg and eddoe (arbi) at Rs 35.
