Hundreds stranded in Ambala,Kurukshetra and Chandigarh railway stations; air traffic restored to normal
As many as 25 trains were cancelled and as many were terminated or diverted on Thursday due to waterlogging on the rail tracks and breaches between Ambala station of Ambala Division and Kurukshetra station of Delhi Division of Northern Railway. The air traffic, meanwhile, was restored to normal and there were no cancellations.
The railway tracks remained submerged at many places, especially in Ambala, and breaches were reported in tracks between Shahbad Markanda and Mori in Delhi Division. Electricity supply also remained disrupted and the signals stopped working.
According to railway officials at the Ambala Division, more trains are likely to be diverted or terminated. The cleaning up of tracks and platforms is being undertaken by the division. A large number of wagons have been deployed to dump ash at sensitive points on the track between Shahbad Markanda and Mori. Railway pumps have been supplemented with those hired and arranged from the military authorities for pumping the water out, said Senior Divisional Commercial Manager G M Singh.
About 500 workers are repairing the damage caused by the water logging. The section between Mori and Shahbad is likely to be restored by Thursday evening, said CPRO Manish Tiwari.
Officials also added that a trial with the help of a goods train would be conducted from Delhi to Ambala on Friday. The morning Kalka-New Delhi Shatabdi for Friday has also been cancelled.
