The Queen’s Baton Relay for the 2010 Commonwealth Games will reach Chandigarh on July 1,instead of July 3 as scheduled earlier.

The baton will come from Jammu and will leave for Una in Himachal Pradesh on July 4.

On July 3,the Baton will start its journey in the city in an open police gypsy from Dhillon Lights Point near Fun Republic at 3.45 pm.

The caravan will pass through the Housing Board Light Point,Railway Light Point,Transport Light Point and then take a turn from Sector 7-26 roundabout towards Golf Course.

It will then move towards the MLA hostel roundabout from where it will take a left turn to Sector 9-10-17-16 roundabout before culminating at the cricket stadium in Sector 16.

At the stadium,cultural programmes and other events will be held.

From 4.30 pm onwards,traffic will not be allowed on the roads leading to the stadium from Matka Chowk,Small Rotary and the Gurdial Singh petrol pump in Sector 22.

Also,traffic will not be allowed on the relay route till the Baton proceeds further,but ambulances will not be stopped.

After the cultural programmes at the stadium,the Baton will proceed to the UT Guest House,where it will be kept overnight.

1,100 cops on duty
Strict arrangements have been made for the day,as 1,100 police personnel will be on duty to prevent any untoward incident.

Announcing the security arrangements and the event’s schedule,SP H S Doon said the baton would be kept in Western Command in Chandimandir for three days and would be carried through the city in a colourful event on July 3.

Ten deputy superintendents of police,26 inspectors,110 non-gazetted officers,150 traffic policemen and 860 other officials will be deployed on the relay route.

On Saturday,the Chandigarh Police conducted a rehearsal on the route.
