Three youngsters from Punjab, including two cousins from one family, died in a tragic car accident in Moncton city, New Brunswick, Canada, late Saturday.

A pall of gloom descended over Malaudh town of Payal sub-division in Ludhiana district after the Somal family received the news of their two children dying in the accident. Among the deceased were Navjot Singh Somal (19) and his cousin Harmanpreet Kaur (23). The third deceased was identified as their friend Rashamdeep Kaur (23) from Samana in Patiala district.

Local media reports from Canada said, “The vehicle was travelling west when it lost a tire, causing the driver to lose control and leave the highway. A 19-year-old man and two 23-year-old women from Moncton who were passengers in the vehicle died at the spot as a result of their injuries.”

Shattered after the untimely demise of their two children, Mandeep Singh said that his daughter Harmanpreet Kaur had gone to Canada almost five years ago. She was working there at a daycare centre. “My nephew Navjot had gone to Canada in April this year and was studying at a college in Brampton. Both had accompanied their friend Rashamdeep, who had to appear in an exam. On the way back from Moncton, the tire of their cab burst. We have lost everything. We have nothing left,” said the wailing father.

Mandeep Singh added that he and his brother (both farmers) had taken loans from arthiyas to send their children to Canada for a better life and job. “We have now lost our children who are never going to return. We urge the Government of India to help us bring their bodies back home. From where are we going to repay our debts now?” he said. Mandeep’s son Rajpreet also works as a truck driver in Canada.

“We got a call Sunday morning that both our children had died in an accident. At first, we could not believe our ears, but soon we realized that God has been cruel,” he wailed .
