UK-based singer Mehsopuria sings of Punjab in his latest album
For UK-based singer Mehsopuria, inspiration comes from the green pastures of Punjab, its rollicking music and its feisty people. The wealth of Punjab lies in our culture,in our virsa, our language, our literature thats what being Punjabi is all about. That is also what my latest album Fearless is all about, he says.
The singer is known for his jazzy appearance and for wearing several kilos of silver jewellery. What few know is that Mehsopuria also designs the jewellery himself as well as paints and writes poetry as a hobby. I was a student of fashion design and intend to launch my clothing and jewellery lines some day, he reveals. A couple of years back,he did try to introduce his designs in Punjab. By the time we started,we got to know that the jeans I wear were already being copied and sold in Punjab as Mehsopurias jeans. Boy,they are always two steps ahead of me, he says with a laugh.
How important is the bling look? It gives you character, your own unique identity and allow you to become a trendsetter. When I first entered the music scene,I had 10-year-old tattoos and chose to wear only silver jewellery. I received a lot of flak since the Punjabi bhangra scene was full of men in gold chains. But I am my own stylist and I gave my own
UK twist to my designs. Soon,my style was a rage. But it is not what he wears that sets him apart,he says. Its humility. One must always act normal.
He has made his mark in the London underground scene, where the beat cant be more alive. Thats because bhangra music is a happy-go-lucky music and it goes with the heart beat, he says.
