Like I always maintain – we are an irresistibly colourful, vibrant, full of life state, and that’s the reason it attracts Bollywoodians to shoot here,” Darshan Aulakh hails the ‘jee ayan nu’ spirit, and looks forward to the films which have been an integral part of his life. “They all carry a strong Punjabi flavour – be it the language, actors, the look, the effects, music…everything has Punjab stamped on it,” Aulakh quickly runs through upcoming releases which have been shot in Punjab, and which have been handled by Darshan Aulakh Productions here.

Let’s begin with Yash Raj’s Dil Bole Haddipa, the much-awaited comeback vehicle of Rani Mukerji, all set for release on September 18. Not only did 80 per cent of the shooting take place here,it has a whole load of Chandigarh-based artists: Gurjap Aulakh,Sandeep Sandhu,Gurpreet Bhullar,Tanmay Arora,Amar Singh,Rahim,Bishan Singh etc. All the cricket players too are from Punjab and Chandigarh. Produced by Aditya Chopra and directed by Anurag Singh, the film’s a rip-off of the romantic comedy ‘She’s The Man’,and stars Rani,Shahid Kapoor,Rakhi Sawant,Anupam Kher and Sherlyn Chopra.

“DBH is a celebration of the never-say-die spirit. Veera (Rani) is a fire-cracker of a girl who lives in a small village but dreams in 70mm. She works in a local theatre group but dreams of playing cricket in the big league,” narrates Darshan adding how while Veera dreams about making it to Indian team,Rohan (Shahid),an accomplished cricket captain returns from England to captain his father’s cricket team which has been losing consecutively for the last eight years. In a village where girls don’t play cricket,Veera has to don a turban and beard and become a man to fulfill her dreams. From there begins the tale of turbans, twists and tricks.

“We shot everywhere…Amritsar,Ludhiana,Ropar,in and around Chandigarh with the help of people,Punjab Government and Punjab Police,” tells Darshan, moving on to the other two, which are slated for release in October and November. “Vipul Amrutlal Shah’s London Dreams will hit the theatres on October 30 across the world,” he says. This too was shot almost 40 per cent here and has Chuppies including K K Doda,Rupinder Rupi,Malkit Rauni,Palli Mangat,Gurjap Aulakh,Rohin Bains, etc. Produced and directed by Shah, the film stars the controversial ‘smokers’ Salman Khan,Ajay Devgan and Asin and Om Puri.

“But the one which is going to be the launch pad for Shatrughan Sinha’s son is the pre-Partition film Saddiyan, which will also see Rishi Kapoor and Rekha in a fresh avataar,” Aulakh, like director Subhash Ghai, always has a cameo in each of his films. Produced and directed by Raj Kanwar,Saddiyan will see debutantes Luv Sinha and Fareena. Looks like this filmi season is going to be a big balle balle fare!
