Punjab govt wants to seize panchayat lands for its cronies: Balbir Sidhu
The villages identified for sale include Sukhgarh, Safipur, Green Enclave, Daun, Manakpur Kallar, Kandala, Kambali, Behrampur, Raipur Kalan, Chapparchiri Kalan, Rurka, Badi, Tangori, Raipur Khurd, Gidderpur, Nanumajra, and Bhagomajra.

Former health minister Balbir Singh Sidhu on Thursday accused the Punjab government of plotting to hand over the shamlat (common) lands of 17 villages in Mohali constituency to its cronies. Calling the move a “betrayal of the people”, he warned of a mass agitation against what he described as an “anti-people policy”.
The villages identified for sale include Sukhgarh, Safipur, Green Enclave, Daun, Manakpur Kallar, Kandala, Kambali, Behrampur, Raipur Kalan, Chapparchiri Kalan, Rurka, Badi, Tangori, Raipur Khurd, Gidderpur, Nanumajra, and Bhagomajra.
Sidhu cited the example of Daun village land, where he said the government tried to transfer property to Shyam Builder through the Municipal Council Kharar. Despite the DDPO withdrawing recommendations and the ADC staying the process, the council passed resolution number 16, which Sidhu termed as being taken under “pressure and misguidance.”
“The government wants to seize these panchayat lands only to distribute them among its favourites. This is not just a robbery of land but also of the future of our villages. Tomorrow, where will we build schools, colleges, hospitals, playgrounds or Dharamshalas,”he asked.
The former minister also raised the Papri village case, alleging that the Mohali MLA encroached upon 6 acres of land worth Rs 300 crore, where illegal development has continued unchecked. “Why is the government protecting its MLA,” he questioned.
Warning that the move would cripple village revenues and weaken the panchayat system, Sidhu criticised the silence of Mohali and Kharar MLAs. He appealed to all 17 panchayats to unite and resist the policy.
