In a move aimed at ensuring the swift disposal of bail applications before the onset of summer vacations, the Punjab and Haryana High Court will commence proceedings in criminal bail matters from 9 am starting May 19. The decision comes in response to a request from the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association.
According to the court’s notification, all benches handling criminal bail petitions—except those presided over by Justice Mahabir Singh Sindhu and Justice N. S. Shekhawat—will begin their sittings an hour earlier than usual. The revised timing will remain in effect until May 29, the start of the summer recess.
The Bar Association had earlier written to the Chief Justice urging early sittings to facilitate the disposal of pending bail pleas. In its communication dated May 14, the Bar said it had received several requests from advocates seeking relief in matters listed before the vacation. The letter, signed by honorary secretary Gagandeep Jammu, noted that starting hearings from 9 am would aid in the timely dispensation of justice and reduce pendency.
Terming the decision a positive step, Bar members said it would provide significant relief to litigants and contribute to the efficient administration of justice.
