PU to hire 75 more guards,hike security budget 40%

Panjab University sanctioned and increase of 40 per cent in the budget of security services,along with adding 75 security guards on the campus.

Keeping in view the increasing incidents of violence on the University campus and also in an effort to avoid such incidents during the coming student elections,Panjab University (PU) today sanctioned and increase of 40 per cent in the budget of security services,along with adding 75 security guards on the campus. The Board of Finance at its meeting today sanctioned an increase in the existing budget of Rs 95 lakh for security services to Rs 1.43 crore.

An additional provision of 75 security guards on contract basis would be added to the existing 113 guards (other than regular posts) on the PU campus,making a total of 188. Out of the total number of security staff on the campus,as much as three-fourths are on contract basis.

Further,to streamline the security within the campus,a separate department — University Security — has been approved. “As the security officers,security guards,chowkidars working under various departments,health centre,offices,hostels on the campus would be put under one main department,that would be known as the University Security,” decided the Board of Finance.

Detailed specifications,including the terms and conditions for engagement of security will be prepared by the Chief of University Security. These terms ,including appointment through the security agencies,would be applicable to those already working as security guards.

On the development front,grants have been sanctioned for multi-level parking,a polymer research centre,science city and call centre to be established on the campus. To address the increasing traffic menace on the campus,the authorities had announced that they would come up with a solution in the form of multi-level parking facilities in the Sector 14 campus.

This would be at a total estimated cost of around Rs 50 crore. Out of this,the Board of Finance today sanctioned as much as Rs 24 crore.

For the Science City to come up in the Sector 25 campus,as much as Rs 5 lakh has been sanctioned. This would be on the lines of existing Science Cities in the country.

A Polymer Research Centre would come up on the campus,for which Rs 5 lakh has been sanctioned. It is expected to benefit the students of MTech in Polymer in their research activities.

To facilitate students,Rs 11 lakh has been sanctioned for establishment of a call centre. The tele-call centre on the campus would be at the service of the general public throughout the day.

Specialised staff employed at this centre would be available to provide information round the clock.
