PU to frame guidelines to prevent sexual harassment

Punjab University has constituted a special committee to frame policies and guidelines against sexual harassment on the campus.

Punjab University has constituted a special committee to frame policies and guidelines against sexual harassment on the campus. Five years after the commissioning of the Panjab University Sexual Harassment Committee, university guidelines are now being framed to deal with sexual harassment cases.

The new guidelines being framed to define sexual harassment by the committee are along the lines of prominent universities like Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University. These policies and guidelines will be tabled before the sub-committee this week which will be finally submitted to the main committee for final approval, with changes and suggestions,if required.

Former Director of Panjab University’s Centre for Women Studies and Senator Pam Rajput has been appointed as the chairperson of the committee and has been given the main task of formulating these guidelines.

“The guidelines framed have a very broad scope and even includes eve-teasing on campus. The rules for filing a complaint have also been simplified to avoid further harassment of the complainant,” said Pam Rajput.

Panjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof R C Sobti said,“Now,with the guidelines and policies in place, everything will be included in the ambit of the committee. Though the committee will be cautious pertaining to the authenticity of the complaints, the norms are framed for the purpose to guide the committee in case these complaints are received by any university official.”
