The bloody clash on the Panjab University campus has once again put a question mark on the quality of students who are studying in the University and indulging in criminal acts. Out of the 16 students booked on Monday, around five previously faced trials on charges of attempt to murder, assault, criminal intimidation, etc. All the 13 accused arrested for Mondays PU clash were produced in court today and sent to judicial custody. The other four accused are currently absconding, said the police. The Chandigarh Police had prepared a dossier of PU students since 2003 who were involved in criminal acts. According to the dossier, around 150 students faced charges ranging from attempt to murder to assault, firing gunshots to using illegal weapons and attacks people with swords. Five of those booked in Mondays clash Simrandeep Singh Sandhu,Simranjeet Singh Dhillon,Uday Singh Wirring,Gurjeet Singh and Vikramjit Singh¿ already face trials in courts on criminal charges, mostly of attempt to murder. Even the others who were booked on Monday had undergone preventive arrest earlier this year for involvement in clashes. These were averted from getting blown up into bloody brawls because of the intervention of the police and PU authorities, said a senior police official. Simrandeep Singh Sandhu was booked on charges of assault and criminal intimidation in 2008. He got anticipatory bail from court. According to the police, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had issued a stay order on his arrest. The next date on his anticipatory bail status is scheduled for November 29,2010. On the other hand,Simranjeet Singh Dhillon and Gurjeet Singh were booked on charges of attempt to murder, besides assault and criminal intimidation in August 2009. They were also booked under the provisions of the Arms Act,when the accused Dhillon and Gurjeet Singh allegedly fired gunshots at a student in the UIET Canteen,Sector 25. The case is pending in the Punjab and Haryana High Court for quashing of FIR against the two accused. Vikramjit Singh was booked on charges of attempt to murder, criminal trespass, rioting and breach of peace in 2008 when he allegedly barged with his friends into the PU Law Department (5-year course) examination centre with swords and attacked a student, who sustained serious injuries and remained admitted at PGIMER for days. Most of the students involved in such campus clashes have a notorious past,as far as their tenures in PU as students are concerned. It is not only that these students enter into bloody clashes; many have been booked on charges of possessing and using illegal arms and ammunition as well. There have been many cases in the past, where we have recovered illegal weapons from PU students. Is this the quality of students that PU is producing? asked Deputy Superintendent of Police (Central) Jagbir Singh. The Chandigarh Police had raised serious objections to these students the during Panjab University Students Council Elections in September. A dossier elaborating the criminal records of all the notorious students was prepared by the Chandigarh Police and such students were kept under watch.
