PU prepones PhD approval meet to aid researchers

These scholars have completed their doctorate work and had been waiting for approval for their work from the PU Syndicate.

Panjab University (PU) has decided to hold a Syndicate meeting on December 5 to grant approval to research scholars who have completed their PhDs in the recent months. These scholars have completed their doctorate work and had been waiting for approval for their work from the PU Syndicate.

The meeting was expected to take place in January, after the commencement of the year of office of the newly elected syndicate on January 1.

On Wednesday, however, the varsity scheduled the meeting in December, taking note of concerns raised by some officials regarding the consequent delay in granting approval to the PhD degrees of the students.”

“Ever since the announcement of the Syndicate elections on December 9,a number of such research scholars have been approaching the authorities seeking early notification regarding completion of their PhD degrees. So,after discussing the matter with some of the Syndicate members, who also expressed the same concern, the request was made to the Vice-Chancellor (VC),that a meeting be held so”n,” said Dean of Student Welfare (DSW),Professor Navdeep Goyal.

“The timely approval from the Syndicate, will also make these research scholars eligible to apply for the posts of lecturers, where the minimum requirement is a PhD degree,” said a Syndicate member.

Apart from the notification for completed PhDs,another significant issue that has been waiting for the Syndicate approval is the allotment of faculties to the new members of the Senate, which includes the Dean Student Welfare (DSW),president,Panjab University Teachers’ Association (PUTA),Dean University Instructions (DUI) and Directorate Public Instructions (DPI),Chandigarh.

The allotment is necessary,as it decides the faculty, for which the member can cast his/her vote in the Syndicate elections.

While, most of the Syndics were in favour that the meeting be held prior to the elections,a few members highlighted that holding a meeting a few days before the elections will only deprive the members of time, which they need to campaign ahead of the elections on December 9. The meeting will also be the last for the present body, before polls are held.
