PU elects new Syndicate

The Chatrath group of the Senate swept the Syndicate elections held on Saturday at the Panjab University.

The Chatrath group of the Senate swept the Syndicate elections held on Saturday at the Panjab University. Of the 15 members,nine were elected unopposed. Elections were held in two faculties Sciences and Arts from where the remaining six members were elected.

The members elected unopposed were: G K Chatrath (Law Faculty),Prof Emanuel Nahar (Correspondence Department),Prof Keshav Malhotra and Prof Ravinder Kaur (Languages),Ashok Goyal and Madhu Prashar (Medical) and Prof Karamjit Singh,Chamanlal and Janmeet (combined faculties).

Three members were elected from the Arts Faculty Prof B S Ghuman,Dr Mukesh Arora and Rajbans Singh Gill; they got 27,26 and 25 votes,respectively. In the faculty,Prof Rabinder Nath Sharma,Prof N K Ohja and Prof S S Sangha lost; they got 21,17 and 17 votes,respectively.

From the Science Faculty,three members were elected Prof Naval Kishore,M L Aeri and Dinesh Talwar; they got 27,23,23 votes,respectively. Dharinder Tayal,R S Janghi and R K Sharma lost; they got 16,10 and 11 votes,respectively.

Prof Dinesh Talwar,elected unopposed,told Newsline,My aim will be to work on development issues related to students. Since I am from colleges,I will ensure that effective decisions are taken for the colleges as well.

Another member Ashok Goyal said,I am from the non-education sector and have unopposed support of both sides. Ill try my best to live up to their expectations.

Earlier,in the Senate meeting,many tried to postpone the elections,but they were held on the scheduled date.

The Syndicate is elected for a year. Its 15 members are elected by the Senate,which has 91 members.

The Senate,on the other hand,is elected every four years the current Senate was elected this year.

The Senate meeting,held every three months,takes a final call on the decisions made by the Syndicate,whose members meet every month.

Deans elected
On Saturday,various deans and secretaries were also elected.

In the Law Faculty,Prof G K Chatrath was elected as the Dean and Prof P S Jaswal as the Secretary.

In the Faculty of Medical Science,Prof K K Talwar was elected as the Dean and Dr Raj Bahadur as the Secretary.

In the Faculty of Dairying,Animal Husbandry and Agriculture,Dr Kamaljit Singh was elected as the Dean and Munish Verma as the Secretary.
