Once again a chief minister’s function in the region ended with lathicharge by the police as they tried to control the mob of angry employees of Zira sugar mill who have not been paid salaries for the last 28 months and unemployed elementary teachers.

The protestors raised slogans before Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal near Zira bus stand when he came to lay the foundation stone of a sewerage treatment plant here. More than 50 people were rounded up,including women and their children, while many sustained injuries in the lathicharge.

Seven employees are admitted in Zira Civil Hospital — one of them has sustained a fracture on one leg and both arms.

On August 14,the CM faced a similar fury when he was addressing a rally at Ferozepur as unemployed linemen and teachers lodged protest.

The Zira sugar mill was closed by the government in 2004 and the mill has liabilities of more than Rs 50 crore.

The employees complained that though the Cabinet had taken a decision more than six months ago that public-private participation should be allowed in mills and hence they could be revived, but no tender notice to this effect had been circulated till date.

The employees were released after a few hours, said Ferozepur SSP Kaustav Sharma. The CM later said he was aware of their problems and the salaries would be released soon.
