The residents of Dadumajra who were protesting near the dumping ground were rounded up by the police today after Section 144 was imposed. The residents have been protesting for the past two days against the filling up of the dumping ground due to processing not being done properly at the garbage processing plant.
The police detained the protesters, who included area Councillor Kamlesh, and took them to the Sector 39 police station. The tent set up by the protesters at the site was removed.
The residents had been sitting round the clock at the site opposite the garbage processing plant. From today they had started a chain hunger strike. However, the police rounded around 40 protesters in the morning.
Terming the action by the police as unjust,Kamlesh said while no action was being taken against the plant management that refused to accept garbage for two days, the people who were protesting have been rounded off.
The problem is not confined to Dadumajra. The whole city is affected. But no action has been taken against the plant management. Instead the residents who are raising their voice peacefully were picked up by the police, she said. Congress councillors went to the police station to extend support. These included Pardeep Chhabra,Chander Mukhi Sharma,Jatinder Bhatia and deputy Mayor Sheela Phool Singh.
The plant management refused to accept garbage after the residents opposed dumping of large quantities of inerts at the dumping ground. Unprocessed garbage is also being dumped and has fast filled up the dumping ground.
