Promising Prinkle returns with twin National titles

Given her current form, the bet was always on Prinkle Singh to lead the race for crown at the Nationals.

Given her current form, the bet was always on Prinkle Singh to lead the race for crown at the Nationals. Her elder brother,Sumitpal Singh, equally talented but lacking the big titles, had come closer to win Nationals on couple of occasions. Nevertheless,it is the younger sibling who has made the family proud by winning twin titles-singles and doubles- in the 7th Ramesh Desai Memorial All India Ranking National Championship at Cricket Club of India (CCI) in Mumbai on Saturday. The previous Nationals won by a female tennis player from Chandigarh was Nandini Sharma who had claimed the doubles title at Fenesta Open in Delhi last year.

Seeded second in the tournament,Prinkle, after toppling several seeded players, ended the challenge of top seed Dedeepya Sai Y of Andhra Pradesh,6-1,6-1,in the girl’s u-12 final. Earlier,in the morning, she partnered with Kritika Chhabra to beat the pair of Mehak Jain and Dedeepya,7-5,6-3,to win her first title of the day.

The Nationals- her first- has come when Prinkle is enjoying the best phase of her life. “Prinkle is playing best tennis of her life. Winning the Nationals was her top priority and she must be delighted to achieve that dream. She has worked hard for it. It is good news for her as it will give her confidence for the future tournaments,” shared Gajendra Singh,Director Coaching of CLTA,where Prinkle is a trainee.

Of lately Prinkle had been enjoying a rich form. Earlier this month,Prinkle, along, with her brother Sumitpal, had won the doubles titles in the Om Devli Memorial Asian Under-14 tennis Series in Pune. In February, she had bagged both the singles and doubles title in AITA Talent Series in Chandigarh.

“She is slowly on her way to become the AITA No 1 in U-12 category. She had been constantly on the move in the last couple of weeks. She was playing all over India as preparation for the Nationals. The way she convincingly defeated the top seed was very satisfying,” added Gajendra.

Now that she has travelled thousands of kilometres in search for the elusive national title,Prinkle can come home and take some rest before she embarks on other important assignments.

Prinkle, born and brought up in Jammu, worked her way to the top when she started raking in titles two years ago. In 2011,the 12-year-old won three AITA titles. But it was her performance in 2012,where she grabbed two AITA Talent Series in a row and then added some more AITA titles to her name, that brought her in the reckoning.

The winning attitude was instilled in her by her father,an amateur footballer, who was an avid sports lover. Her affinity for tennis began by watching Sumitpal slogging on the tennis courts. Since the age of four,Prinkle, hooked to the sport, has been taking lessons at CLTA. Now that the younger sibling has done it,the eyes are on the senior, who made a second round exit from the Nationals at Mumbai.
