The prestigious 400-bedded Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS),which also houses a medical college, has been running on generators as the power supply to the institute was disconnected by Power Com for not depositing the electricity bill of Rs 45 lakh, for the past four months. The Power connection was disconnected on Thursday by Power Com officials.
Power Com SDO Balbir Singh, who is looking after PIMS,confirmed that the power supply to PIMS was disconnected on Thursday. We have served various notices to them and requested them to deposit the pending bills of around Rs 45 lakh but they didnt move towards this direction and as per norms we were required to disconnect the connection, he added. Power Com even suggested that PIMS take the permission from higher authorities to deposit the pending bill in instalments.
Punjab Rural development minister Surjit Singh Rakhra is the president-cum-chairman of the PIMS Medical and Education Charitable Society. Rakhra said he was not aware of the matter. It may be noted that PIMS has become a destination for thousands of patients.
