With some of the key functions to render patient care at the PGI lying unutilised for over three weeks now,the institute has finally started the process of filling up vacant posts.
In the absence of any qualified medical physicist to operate the Rs 27 crore gamma knife under the Neurosurgery department,the high-end facility to treat patients suffering from brain tumours has been closed since the last month. The PGI,now has advertised for 11 posts of medical physicists on a regular basis. The last date for applying is July 15.
It has been learnt that more than 200 posts of faculty and non-faculty Group A posts have been advertised this month.
However,to fill the immediate vacancy at the Gamma knife centre to enable patients get the latest facility in the tumour management,the institute has advertised separately for the four posts of medical physicists on the ad-hoc basis.
One medical physicist who left the job last month,following which the Centre had to be closed,was also working on the ad-hoc basis. The last date for receiving applications is June 18 and the post once filled,it would enable the centre to function again, said an official.
In addition to the Gamma Knife centre,a cobalt machine under the nuclear medicine department of the PGI,meant for the treatment of the cancer patients,is also lying unused for want of a technical hand.
The ad-hoc appointments also intend to restart the use of this machine. It was a letter from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) in May,which ordered PGI to close the gamma knife centre started last year as no qualified technician was available.
Meanwhile,with over 140 faculty posts also lying vacant at the PGI,a majority of which are the posts of the assistant professors,the process of recruitment has also begun.
The entire process would take some weeks before the number of intake is finalised, added hospital official. Against the sanctioned posts of around 450,PGI has around 300 faculty members in its various departments.
