With an aim to bring uniformity in the treatment of Immune thrombocytopenia (low platelet disorder),experts from around the country would be coming up with first of its kind national guidelines.

This would be done during the three-day 52nd Annual Conference of the Indian Society of Haematology and Transfusion Medicine being organised by the departments of Internal Medicine and Haematology at PGIMER from November 10-12.

Speaking about the guidelines,Dr Subhash Verma, head of the department of Internal medicine,PGIMER said,“Throughout the country the line of treatment for the disease has varied and at times it may hamper with patient care. So to avoid any ambiguity, these guidelines have been framed to bring uniformity in the patient care and would be released during the conference.”

With the latest and advanced researches in the field of finding treatment of different cancers, doctors from the department of internal Medicine, haematology spoke about cures available for various cancers. “While it is commonly perceived that cancer cannot be treated,in reality, there are hundreds of cancers, many of which are treatable and curable as they behave differently, spread differently and have different causes of occurrence,” said Dr Varma.

For instance, magic bullet,a tablet, which is being provided to about 1500 patients annually free of cost, cures chronic myelogenous (or myeloid) leukemia (CML) – a kind of blood cancer.

“The medicine which costs about Rs 1.10 lakh per month is being provided free of cost by the Max foundation,USA since 2003 at PGI and five other centres across the country,” said Dr Pankaj Malhotra, organising secretary of the three conference.

Elaborating on this,Dr Malhotra said that earlier when the drug was not available,a patient suffering from CML would be left with three and half years to live. “With this tablet, patients have been cured and are living a healthy lifestyle,” he said.
