Two nattily dressed women in their early-thirties,with one pushing a perambulator, were a few steps ahead of us as we made our way towards the courtyard area of Elante. As they straddled their shopping bags, the discussion veered to where they could catch a quick bite. While we didnt follow the eager shoppers,we did think of them minutes before stepping inside the all-new The Girl in the Café. The cheery pink walls with cutesy posters along with comfy sink-in chairs and a general easy vibe would have surely appealed to the ladies.
Unlike its elder sister the original Girl in the Café housed in Sector 17 who is more magnanimous with space and set-up,this is a truly petite version with around 60 covers. However, thats a small difference given how the menu here has undergone a pretty grand makeover.
We are quick to find our table and eagerly reach for the menu. First impression we like the fact that the casual yet gourmet approach associated with the café has been retained here too. Its a mix of Continental cuisine with a definite British slant, starting with all-day breakfast options to soups, salads, sandwiches, pizzas and pastas. The drinks are all non-alcoholic as of now,but the iced teas and Lavazza coffee should compensate.
Given the cafes proximity to the main shopping area, its no surprise the dishes chosen include the likes of wood-fired pizzas and British butty sandwiches. We can imagine a bunch of gossip girls tucking into one of those already. But what caught our eye was an entire section of one-pan breakfast meals. For someone like us who relishes a sunny side up even in the middle of the afternoon, choosing to order the one-pan fish breakfast meal was quick. Although we are fans of their spinach pumpkin salad,we side-stepped it for the smoked chicken salad. Our breakfast arrived warm and it is definitely a lot for one person to wolf down no matter how hungry. The fish, basa in this case, went perfectly well with the gooey egg and a generous portion of smoked tomatoes and grilled mushrooms. The salad was a welcome addition and as tempted as we were to try the English bread pudding,we chose to keep it for the next visit.
