A school in Punjab’s Patiala received a bomb threat, triggering panic among students, parents, and school authorities Tuesday, less than two weeks after educational institutes in Amritsar and Jalandhar got similar threats.

The police said the latest threat was received via email at the official email ID of Ryan International Global School in Urban Estate Phase-2 at around 9.30 am, forcing the school authorities to evacuate the campus.

The police said their teams rushed to the school premises within minutes of receiving the information. An anti-sabotage squad carried out an extensive search of the campus using specialised bomb detection equipment, including a Non-Linear Junction Detector (NLJD), to rule out the presence of any explosive device.

Confirming the incident, Varun Sharma, Senior Superintendent of Police, Patiala, said, “The threat was treated with utmost seriousness. Our anti-sabotage team reached the spot immediately, along with bomb-detection equipment and sniffer dogs. No explosive device was found during the checking”.

“However, as a precautionary measure, another round of checking will be conducted, and the school administration was advised to declare a holiday for Tuesday,” he said.

Sharma added that the Punjab Police’s cyber wing has launched an investigation to trace the source of the threatening email.

“Efforts are underway to identify the IP address and the country and state from where the email originated. Similar bomb threat emails have been received by schools in other cities as well in recent days,” he said.

On December 12, several prominent schools in Amritsar received bomb threat emails, leading to the evacuation and closure of schools and causing panic across the city. On December 14, as many as 11 schools in Jalandhar received similar threats.

Anti-sabotage teams conducted searches at all locations, but no explosives were recovered, though schools were closed for the day as a safety measure.

Police officers said that despite multiple incidents, the source of the emails has not yet been traced. They said investigations are ongoing, and security agencies remain on high alert to prevent any untoward incident.
