Both Karan Pathak and Ekjot Singh started taking cricket lessons from former Punjab Ranji Trophy cricketer and now a SAI coach,Mahesh Inder Singh,when they were eight years old. It was a moment of pride for their coach Mahesh when he got to know that both his wards have been selected in the India U-16 schools team,announced by the Schools Games Federation of India (SGFI).
The selected team of sixteen players will travel to Pakistan in September end and thereafter to England and Sri Lanka,for ODI tournaments.
Karan,a student of Guru Teg Bahadur School in Patiala who is an attacking middle-order batsman and a leg-break bowler,was part of the Punjab school team that finished runners-up in last season’s school national tournament. Punjab lost to Delhi in the final match. In that tournament,Karan had scored 165 runs in five innings and bagged 12 wickets also. Talking about his selection,Karan said: It will be a different experience for me. I have never crossed border to take part in any tournament. I have been training very hard on my game with Mahesh sir. I hope to deliver the goods for the team and help them win matches.
Karan admires Indian cricket team captain MS Dhoni. Karan,16,is known to be an aggressive batsman and is also called as ‘Virender Sehwag’ of Patiala. His father is a document writer in the Patiala Courts while his mother is a housewife.
Meanwhile,Ekjot,16,idolises Glenn McGrath. Ekjot,a talented left-handed batsman who bowls with the right hand,is a compact middle-order batsman. Ekjot,a student of Yadavindra Public School,was part of the IPSC team in the school national tournament.
Sharing his excitement on his selection,he said,I am looking forward to play in Pakistan. It will be a big test for us. I will be aiming to contribute with both bat and ball. Ekjot had scored 80 runs and scalped six wickets in the three innings during the school nationals last year.
Ramandeep also makes the cut
Ramandeep Singh,a student of Saupin’s School,Sector 32,has also made the cut in the India Under-16 schools team for the Pakistan tour. He is a top-order batsman who scored 165 runs in four innings during the school national tournament last year. Ramandeep trains at the Saupin’s Cricket Academy.
