Air travellers had a harrowing time at the Chandigarh airport on Thursday as only six flights were operational out of the ten daily scheduled departures.
The two Jet Airways flights to Delhi and Mumbai were suspended as the pilots are on mass sick leave.
The Kingfisher Airlines flights to Delhi and Mumbai,meanwhile,are not operational for a week from September 10 to 17,owing to maintenance of aircraft.
Kingfisher Airlines operates four flights daily from the city two to Mumbai,one for Delhi and one for Jammu-Srinagar. Of these,the Delhi (IT 605) and one Mumbai flight (IT 600) was cancelled.
In order to ensure smooth operations and put an end to the inconvenience to passengers,55 employees of the ground staff of Jet Airways at Chandigarh requested the pilots on leave for the last three days,to resume services at the earliest.
Addressing the media,station manager Abid Hussain said: The ground staff at Chandigarh is not supporting pilots but the airline management. A few employees cannot hold the entire airline to ransom. We personally request the pilots to join back.
An employee added that of the total airline strength,nearly 70 per cent constitutes the ground staff which is suffering due to the disruption in flights.
As many as 58 passengers of Jet Airways for the Chandigarh-Mumbai flight and 42 passengers for the Delhi flight were informed in advance about the cancellation.
Of those who turned up at the airport on Thursday,four passengers of the Delhi bound flight were sent by road along with a full refund of the ticket,while one was accommodated in the Indian Airlines flight.
